Established in 1976, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is a premier institute of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, for research and capacity building for the urban sector in India. NIUA’s broad objective is to bridge the gap between research and practice on issues related to urbanisation. Overview of the Role


The Senior Associate – Communications will report to the Head – Communications and Strategy. The role requires strong writing, editing and design skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively across departments and institutions to ensure consistent messaging and branding. An established network of media contacts will be an added advantage.

Job Description


• Developing and implementing internal and external communications strategies aligned with organisational goals.
• Creating, editing, and designing high-quality communication outputs to enhance institutional visibility, including brochures, presentations, website content, social media creatives, event collaterals, and banners.
• Managing NIUA’s social media platforms, including content planning, posting, performance monitoring, and regular website updates.
• Managing media management and relations by devising media strategy, preparing media pitches, maintaining press databases, coordinating interviews and press events, securing publication in digital and print media, monitoring coverage, tracking Key Performance Indicators, and preparing performance reports.
• Supporting event communications by co-organising and participating in events with programme teams and external stakeholders, and preparing event reports and related documentation.
• Planning and delivering branding and outreach initiatives across digital and print channels, including social media, press releases, topical days, podcasts, editorials, campaigns, and dissemination of communications best practices.
• Drafting ministerial and senior leadership communication materials, including speeches, briefing notes, discussion points, presentations, and summit declarations.
• Supporting the development of knowledge products such as outcome documents, guidelines, reports, and manuals, including content structuring and graphic design inputs.
• Monitoring sector and media trends and institutionalising best practices in communications and public relations.
• Ensuring consistency of branding and messaging across all institutional materials and platforms.


Required & Preferred Qualifications


Skill

• Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), Canva, and Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with video editing software would be an advantage.
• Prior experience working with the Government of India/ state governments/ multilateral agencies/ international forums, with excellent verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

Education

Master’s degree in Communications, Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, Public Policy, or equivalent.

Experience

• Prior experience working with the Government of India, with experience in curating knowledge for large-scale policy events. • 6-8 years of overall professional experience, with at least 5 years of experience specifically in communications and content development, preferably in the development sector or with government programmes. • Demonstrated experience in developing high-quality written content, especially policy-level documents, and strong editorial skills. • Demonstrated experience designing communication materials across print, digital and multimedia platforms. • Demonstrated experience in liaising with media contacts.
