Established in 1976, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is a premier institute of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, for research and capacity building for the urban sector in India. NIUA’s broad objective is to bridge the gap between research and practice on issues related to urbanisation. For more than 45 years now, NIUA has been the vanguard for contributing to and building the urban narrative for a fast-evolving urban India. The Institute has been working on bringing forth key areas of concern for urban India to build the discourse at various scales. It has utilised its research, knowledge management, policy advocacy and capacity building competencies to address urban challenges and continuously strives to develop sustainable, inclusive and productive urban ecosystems in the country.


Overview of the Role


Responsible for planning and executing research activities aligned with the Centre’s strategy and deliverables, both independently and collaboratively. Leads the development of a comprehensive urban housing data repository across city, state, and national levels, covering formal and informal sectors through primary and secondary research. Conducts field research, stakeholder consultations, and liaises with government departments to support evidence generation and policy engagement. Contributes to high-quality reports, publications, and knowledge outputs, while coordinating capacity-building programmes and key events such as workshops and conferences. Supports cross-functional initiatives and undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director to advance the Centre’s research and outreach objectives.

Job Description


• Plan and conduct of assigned research activities, individually or jointly, in accordance with the Centre’s research strategy and deliverables
• Supervise the development of a data repository on urban housing at the city, state and national level – encompassing formal and informal sectors - through primary and secondary research
• Liaise with key government offices and departments for conduct of research and events
• Contribute and author reports, papers and other published outputs of the Centre
• Lead field research and stakeholder interviews in cities of interest across India
• Coordinate the preparation of capacity building and training programmes organized for different urban housing stakeholders
• Coordinate the conduct of key events (e.g. workshops, conferences, review meetings etc.)
• Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the team leader/Director


Required & Preferred Qualifications


Skill

• Extensive knowledge of databases pertaining to Indian real estate, macro economy, and household level datasets
• Significant experience in data collection, cleaning and basic statistical analysis.
• Strong inter personal and co-ordination skills, and able to build and coordinate collaborations with developers, civil society organisations and academic institutions
• Excellent written and oral communication in English
• Willingness to travel to small and big cities for conduct of field research

Education

Post graduate (Masters) qualification in Planning/Urban Development/ Management/Economics/ Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure/ Business Administration/ Law/ Public Policy or related field from a reputed national and international institute.

Experience

5-8 years of experience in research, urban development practice, and consulting.
