IIHMR University is a leading knowledge institution of the country engaged in teaching, research and training in the domains of public health, health and hospital administration, pharmaceutical management and development management. Over the past 37 years, IIHMR University has carved a niche for itself among management institutions, both in India and abroad. The institute is the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centre for strengthening Health Systems based on Primary Care and is recognized as an ‘Institute of Excellence’ by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The University offers MBA, MPH (in collaboration with JHU) and doctoral programs, executive education, research and consultancy in the fields of hospital management, health management, pharmaceutical management, development management, and a variety of fields related to the health sector. The institution has already conducted more than 800 research projects and studies in the core areas of public health, Health and Hospital Management, Pharmaceutical Management, Health Economics and Finance, Population and Reproductive Health, Development Management, Institutional Networking and capacity building in India and wider South-East Asian Region. Now stepping in the fourth decade, as we go global, we strive to generate knowledge to help develop effective health, social and public systems and socially relevant health technologies. The genesis of IIHMR owes to the pressing need during 1980’s to improve the health systems in India. For a country as large and complex as India, the bottlenecks impeding effective healthcare delivery were aplenty. Although the health systems were characterized by severe deficiencies in physical and human resources which continues to be a major issue even today, the bigger problem lay in the poor management of healthcare systems. It was established in 1984 as Indian Institute of Health Management and Research (IIHMR).

Overview of the Role
The Head – Research will provide strategic leadership to the University’s research ecosystem with a strong focus on mobilising research funding, securing sponsored projects, and strengthening institutional research partnerships. The role is responsible for expanding IIHMR University’s research portfolio, funding base, and national/international research visibility, while working closely with faculty, research centres, and external stakeholders.
Job Description
Research Strategy & Leadership:
• Develop and implement a comprehensive research strategy aligned with the University’s academic and societal priorities.
• Strengthen interdisciplinary and applied research across public health, healthcare management, pharmaceuticals, development, and allied domains.
• Support creation and growth of research centres, thematic labs, and flagship research programmes.
Research Funding & Sponsored Projects:
• Lead efforts to secure externally funded research projects, sponsored studies, and consulting assignments.
• Identify funding opportunities from:
• Central & State Government bodies
• Multilateral & bilateral agencies
• Foundations, CSR organisations, and philanthropic institutions
• International research and development agencies
• Build a sustainable pipeline of short-term and long-term funded research programmes.
Proposal Development & Grant Acquisition:
• Oversee preparation and submission of concept notes, EOIs, and detailed research proposals.
• Work closely with faculty members to convert academic expertise into fundable research proposals.
• Ensure quality, compliance, budgets, and timelines as per funding agency guidelines.
• Establish systems to track funding calls, submissions, approvals, and outcomes.
Partnerships & Institutional Collaborations:
• Build and manage strategic partnerships with:
• Large NGOs and development organisations
• National & international research institutions
• Social and market research organisations
• Think tanks, policy bodies, and universities
• Promote consortium-based and multi-institutional research initiatives.
• Represent IIHMR University in high-level research forums, donor meetings, and policy platforms.
Research Governance & Project Oversight:
• Ensure effective monitoring and oversight of ongoing research projects.
• Support timely reporting, compliance, audits, and deliverables to funding agencies.
• Strengthen ethical research practices and adherence to institutional and regulatory norms.
Faculty & Research Capacity Building:
• Mentor and guide faculty in:
• Research design and proposal development
• Donor engagement and funded research management
• Facilitate training programs on grant writing, research methods, and impact dissemination.
• Encourage publication, policy briefs, and translation of research into practice.
Required & Preferred Qualifications
Skill
• Deep understanding of national and international research funding ecosystems.
• Strong proposal writing and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to bridge academia, policy, and funding agencies.
• Strategic thinking with excellent communication and leadership skills.
• High level of integrity, professionalism, and research governance capability.
Education
Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Economics, Management, or related disciplines. Strong academic and applied research orientation is essential.
Experience
10 – 15+ years of progressive experience in research leadership and management, including sponsored research, grant acquisition, and institutional partnerships. A proven track record of successfully securing and managing externally funded research projects is essential.
