Position Summary


ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is a world-renowned, member-based professional organization focused on serving the technical, educational and professional needs of the engineering and technology communities on a worldwide basis. The Society addresses key technology-related challenges in the public interest in a manner that engages core engineering constituencies including government, academia, industry, engineers, students, and technology development professionals. ASME’s climate action imperatives include:

• Supporting the global consensus of climate science and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s target, currently limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels
• Enabling engineers in accelerating the drive towards net-zero emissions and a carbon negative future
• Facilitating communication on climate policy among government, industry, and academia–leveraging ASME’s successful history of providing nonpartisan expertise to policymakers
• Developing and engaging the international engineering workforce that meets our present and future climate challenges, and
• Aligning ASME’s sustainability and climate strategy to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We currently have an outstanding opportunity for a Sustainability Program Manager. The Sustainability Program Manager is responsible for supporting and implementing programs and projects and advancing ASME’s sustainability and climate action imperatives, particularly in India and the surrounding region.

ASME is seeking an individual who will be adaptable to the organization’s evolving portfolio in sustainability and driven to advance ASME’s response to climate change. This role is split across project management, research execution, data analysis, sustainability reporting, stakeholder management, and governance operations, and would suit a candidate with prior engineering, consulting, climate training, and/or startup experience.

The Sustainability Program Manager will work closely with the ASME Strategy team and the staff-based ASME Sustainability Steering Committee and volunteer-based Committee on Sustainability. Given the cross-sectional nature sustainability at ASME, the Sustainability Program Manager will have broad exposure to ASME’s business units work cross-functionally to drive continuous evolution and implementation of ASME's climate action strategy, reporting and portfolio advancement.

Collectively, ASME’s products, programs and platforms in Sustainability aim to advance engineering and technology by integrating social, environmental, economic, and regulatory considerations, enabling engineers to accelerate climate action. Topics of sustainability projects and programs may include: greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, decarbonization strategies, overall sustainability and climate strategy, regulations and reporting frameworks, stakeholder management, among others. In addition, candidates that are savvy in data visualization, complex problem solving, and have experience implementing sustainability strategies are preferred.


Principal Accountabilities:


• Support the ASME Sustainability Steering Committee to advance enterprise initiatives related to sustainability, including refinement of business plans for existing programs, products and/or services to ensure sustainability impact, particularly in India and surrounding regions.
• Support implementation of sustainability reporting (ex. GHG inventory) and disclosure strategy and contribute to ongoing evolution and implementation.
• Contribute to preparation and dissemination of annual organizational sustainability reports.
• Support sustainability governance structures (ex. Committee on Sustainability) and processes enabling effective engagement and collaboration with key stakeholders.
• Inform partnership strategies and models. Advance engagement of potential and existing enterprise partners, contributors and community of experts by proactively building and managing relationships to deliver on enterprise goals.
• Collaborate with key ASME staff to contribute learnings from initiatives and thought leaders and integrate those learnings to adapt and evolve the enterprise sustainability strategy.
• With business unit owners, enable development of product and programs, supporting processes and organizational models aligned to enterprise business and sustainability goals.
• Identify relevant partners, define resource requirements, ensure effective programmatic transactions, increase reach and impact where appropriate.
• Co-design of high impact marketing and communication strategies for sustainability initiatives, events and reporting with ASME’s Marketing and Strategic Communications teams.
• Identify and present evidence (ex. case studies) to support communications and advocacy around priority sustainability issues and influence the supporting ecosystem of internal and external stakeholders.
• Grow and represent ASME’s sustainability expertise and credibility at key forums and events.
• Lead coordination of ASME-organized events related to sustainability. Assist program owners in the end-to-end event execution from planning, delivery and post-event data collection/retrospectives.
• Serve as a resource on issues relating to sustainability and climate action including program and product development, best practices, research methods, and communities of practice, as it relates to fostering individuals working in this space.


Key qualifications:

1) 5+ Years of work experience or equivalent experience working on sustainability consulting or research projects for startups / companies

2) Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience 4 years of relevant experience in sustainability or program management, including some budget responsibility

3) Experience with sustainability reporting and related frameworks / standards:


4)Skills in delivering some aspects of sustainability and/or research work - e.g. environmental sciences research and modeling within GHG accounting and/or LCA modeling

5) Experience leading development and implementation of sustainability reporting, strategy, and/or projects in a large organization

6)Knowledge of topics and trends related to sustainability reporting and corporate sustainability strategy, including environmental challenges and solutions (e.g., climate change, clean energy, carbon foot-printing, water, and circular economy)

7)Familiarity with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings/rankings (e.g., Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), MSCI, and Sustainalytics)

8)Ability to drive projects from idea through to implementation, including identifying and implementing process improvements

9)Excellent project management skills and ability to manage many concurrent projects with competing deadlines, manage expectations and define priorities

10)Excellent English communication, writing and presentation skills

11)Competency using online collaboration tools ex. Zoom and familiarity with other software tools - e.x. AirTable, Miro

12) Ability to coordinate a global set of stakeholders and with varying levels of leadership towards a unified vision/approach

13) Strong leadership skills with demonstrated success formulating program plans and implementation.

14) Ability to work with minimal supervision, be resourceful, and work on multiple tasks simultaneously and at a fast pace.

15) Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams including engineers, sustainability practitioners, entrepreneurs, academics, non-profits, for-profits and program implementers with efficiency and diplomacy.

16) Strong entrepreneurship curiosity, and interest in executing sustainability projects and training

17) Strong attention to detail, and good ability to keep information and work well-organized and on-track

18) Ability to conduct research & analysis in climate topics to help execute projects

19) Ability to help answer technical climate and environmental questions that may asked by stakeholders and staff

20) Ability to work independently, efficiently and effectively remotely
