PRAYATN is a voluntary organization was founded to enable people to respond to and change their situation of inequality and injustice. We focus on education and awareness, community involvement and collective action as the driving force of social and economic change. Our core strategies include development and strengthening of community-based institutions; capacity building of different stakeholders including beneficiaries and duty bearers and convergence with programs of government and other civil society organizations. We work on multiple themes in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
About Ansh
Ansh, a Charity Entrepreneurship incubated charity, is dedicated to saving new-born lives by building healthcare capacity in government district hospitals in India. Our mission is to create a scalable and cost-effective model that implements Kangaroo care and other impact focused new-born care practices such as breastfeeding counselling, monitoring of danger signs, IPC (Infection Prevention and Control) measures, counselling in best new-born care practices and closely working with the hospital on making these services long-term and sustainable.
The program Kangaroo Mother Care is jointly run by Prayatn Sanstha and Ansh
Location:- Tonk, Rajasthan (or be willing to relocate)
Remuneration: INR 6 lakh/Annum
Key Responsibilities
The role of the Program Coordinator can be defined as:
- Network and liaise with Government functionaries, and other key players at the various levels in the program area such as civil societies, local bodies and program champions towards ensuring synergy.
- Prepare monthly rosters for nurse shifts by the last working day of every month.
- Contribute to hiring, training and reviewing nursing staff.
- Manage a team of 10-12 nurses and ensure that they are following the program guidelines.
- Identify potential beneficiaries for screening by doing multiple rounds to the labour and delivery room everyday.
- Track deaths, readmissions, referrals, critical cases and KMC Champions.
- Ensure that babies meet the discharge criteria set by the government and our KMC program.
- Ensure that babies who are exhibiting danger and distress are referred as per protocol and receive necessary medical attention.
- Ensure that follow-ups are conducted in a timely manner.
- Oversee & Ensure Infection Prevention and Control processes by Nursing and Hospital Staff.
- Help the nurses with firefighting and troubleshooting any patient care issues they may encounter.
- Help nurses counsel challenging families.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness in all documentation and data management processes.
- Strengthen and enhance the quality of all program components through continuous and close coordination and coaching of the nursing team, and problem solving the operational challenges at the healthcare facility.
- Share information, data and issues with your line manager and help improve the quality of data collected at the healthcare facility and on the phone.
About the Intervention:
Kangaroo Mother Care is a highly cost-effective and scientifically proven intervention for saving newborn lives.
Kangaroo Care has three components:
- Skin-to-Skin Contact: Skin-to-skin contact with the mother regulates the infant's body temperature, reducing hypothermia.
- Close Monitoring: Monitoring mothers and newborns for danger signs.
- Exclusive Breastfeeding: Exclusive breastfeeding provides benefits to both mother and newborn.
Main model components are:
- Repurpose some space in the health facilities and create dedicated space for Kangaroo Care.
- Recruit health workers to act as dedicated Kangaroo Care counsellors for mothers.
- Provide training to clinicians and nurses on supporting and managing kangaroo care and other components of the program.
- Follow up with mothers after discharge to ensure continued behavioral change and monitor the newborn for any danger signs.
Position Overview
This position would be highly critical to building programs in the Tonk district of Rajasthan from the ground up. The program coordinator will help scope health facility, liaise with health and government stakeholders and work alongside Prayatn at the district level. Once we set up our programs this role will assist in the coordination, support and overall management of the program.
Skills and Competencies
- Stakeholder Management: ability to identify, engage, and manage relationships with individuals and groups who have a direct or indirect interest in the organization's activities, goals, or outcomes.
- Communication Skills: ability to exchange information in a clear, respectful, and timely manner and adapting to needs of a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Project Management: ability to plan, execute, monitor, control, and close projects by defining clear objectives, allocating resources, and coordinating the efforts of team members and stakeholders to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria.
- Knowledge of Postnatal and Newborn Care: understanding and experience in application of principles, practices, and guidelines related to the care and well-being of mothers and newborns during the postnatal period.
- Data Collection and Management: a proven track record of collecting and managing data, preferably within a public health setting and an ability to identify and use the right data collection methods and instruments for the context.

- Masters in Social Work / Social Science / Public Health and Bachelors in Nursing
- Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in supporting implementation of maternal or child health or nutrition programs at the district level
- Demonstrated experience of working with data-driven NGOs
- Excellent knowledge of local language (Hindi)
