Mahila SEWA Urban Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society Ltd. - Overview

Mahila SEWA Urban Cooperative Thrift & Credit Society Ltd. (hereafter SEWA Delhi Cooperative) was founded in February 2007 after a long-drawn struggle by women informal workers associated with Self[1]Employed Women’s Association, Delhi. For years, one of the most pressing challenges of these poor yet self-enterprising women has been a severe lack of access to crucial banking services such as savings, investments, microfinance support, etc. What started as a micro-level intervention in organising women informal workers into. Self-Help Groups in urban clusters of Jahangirpuri, Raghubir Nagar and Sunder Nagri soon generated wide-spread demands by them for wanting equitable access to financial services that were embedded in the complex socio-economic realities of these women informal workers living in

Delhi’s underserved communities. Therefore, through sustained consultative meetings at both levels -with women at the grassroots and with state authorities which lasted more than a year, SEWA Delhi Cooperative came into existence as an empowering cohort of 234 women came forward to contribute a humble amount of INR 1,08,000 towards share capital for the institution. Since 2007, we have expanded to newer, more vulnerable areas within the city. Presently, the women-owned, governed and managed SEWA Delhi Cooperative has over 7,800 members - all female workers in the informal sector - across 8 urban clusters in Delhi. It is guided by a Board of Directors comprising elected representatives from within the women informal workers in the communities, distinguished social activists and grassroots practitioners who have taken the SEWA movement to newer heights.
