The Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a research center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which collaborates with governments, NGOs and international development organizations to inform policy with sound evidence. At India, the J-PAL South Asia office is housed at Institute of Financial Research and Management (IFMR) in Chennai.
J-PAL seeks qualified applicants for the position of Environment Consultant/Field Manager for a project on green enterprises in India. The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research in the environment and business domain.
Project Description
The green accelerator project is being implemented by Techno Serve across green enterprises in India. J-PAL South Asia is hiring for Environment Consultant position(s) to conduct surveys and environmental audits on small green enterprises as a part of the accelerator program. This project is aimed at measuring the financial and environmental performance of green enterprises that are a part of the accelerator program. In the ongoing phase, we are looking at carrying out an extensive survey across 100+ enterprises spread across more than 50 cities in India.
We are looking for Environmental consultants who could conduct data collection on environmental and financial aspects.
The job responsibilities will include (not exhaustive):
- Completely understand the measurement framework and questions before visiting a firm
- Carrying out extensive data collection and survey across different cities that will involve detailed questionnaires on financial, social and environmental aspects of the business
- Extensive traveling to physically meet the entrepreneurs, understand their business, and undertake the survey
- Coordinating and maintaining relationships with green enterprise entrepreneurs and partner organizations on all field activities.
- Support with planning and execution of survey across different data collection rounds.
- Follow-up with entrepreneurs over emails/messages to send pending data
- Reporting to Research Associate and Research Manager on all the above mention activities
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
Required
- Minimum Bachelor of Environmental Science/Bachelor of Environmental Engineering degree or equivalent
- Stakeholder Management
- Basic understanding of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 measurements
- Prior experience in environmental auditing/measurement is highly preferred
- Excellent communication skills in English and in Hindi
- Flexible, self-motivating, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently within a team
- Willingness to travel extensively in India
Preferred
- Basic understanding of financial and accounting of businesses
- Environmental Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of a product
- Understanding of Scope 4 or ‘avoided emissions’ of a sustainable business
- Understanding of emission sources in industrial and manufacturing processes
- Initiate to contribute, learn and ideate new solutions in a dynamic team environment
- Familiarity with data collection and Survey
- CTO will be an advantage
Location: Candidates based out of Delhi are highly preferable, as this is one of the base locations for the project. This is not a desk-based job, and the Consultant will not be working out of office. The role requires frequent travel to multiple cities in a region of India around (within 500 km) the base location, and occasionally undertake longer travels (1000-2000 km) as and when required. J-PAL bears all the travel and stay costs, and provides per-diem to the Consultant for food and miscellaneous expenses, while on the field.
