Job Role

Role Overview:

CIVICUS aims to co-create narratives engaging a network of “Communicators for Civic Action,” to promote optimism, demand and active support for citizen action and civic freedoms.

This network brings together communicators, storytellers, journalists and citizen journalists among CIVICUS membership and civil society allies. The Communications Officer – Narratives and Networks will play a critical role in coordinating and amplifying the grassroots narratives to the global level and making accessible and relevant the knowledge and analysis of organizations like CIVICUS.

By strengthening the outreach, accessibility, and engagement of narratives, we aim to strengthen citizen action. The role will also support outreach and engagement through sustained narratives to a wider variety of audiences.

The Communications Officer – Narratives and Networks will strengthen the existing links between storytellers among CIVICUS membership and beyond. They will also build new relationships with like-minded activists, civil society, international agencies, media, and unlikely allies.

They will facilitate building knowledge and capacity for innovative, impactful, accessible, and pragmatic narratives and campaigns within CIVCUS and across our networks.

Areas of Responsibilities

Key Activities

Build narratives through co-creating stories to catalyse civic action

• Facilitate and coordinate the co-creation of stories on civil society and civic space working with CIVICUS, member, and partner networks

• Develop a sustainable narratives and engagement funnel to promote outreach, mind shifts, and action to promote civic action

• Identify opportunities to promote optimism and enthusiasm and to exert our content proactively or in response to key external events and embed them in the content planners

• Identify pre-existing social, political, and cultural stories that may help or hinder our pro-civic action narratives

• Support monitor disinformation and misinformation on civic space and civil society movements. Coordinate the Communicators for Civic Action Network

Coordinate the Communicators for Civic Action Network

• Support build, update, and maintain the communicators for Civic Action network bringing together Communication Savvy CIVICUS members, creator and journalist allies, and other civil society partners

• Support continuous engagement of the network at global level and by using regional and/or thematic focused groups

• Coordinate in-person and online events for mutual learning and co-creation

Support build capacity of the Communicators network

• Listen, analyze and articulate the learning needs of the communicator network

• Help design research to understand the cutting-edge innovations on storytelling and communication for positive social change

• Coordinate and deliver learning journeys bringing in external expertise and knowledge sharing within the network

• Identify and build targeted press and thematic influencer lists on human rights interest areas relevant to CIVCIUS and the network

Person Specification

Education, Language & Qualifications

• A degree or equivalent in communications, marketing, social media, creative content development, social psychology or related field

• Minimum three years of experience in communications, media, campaigns, or online community building

• Commitment to positive change – and working with civil society, citizen activists, non-profit organisations, charitable networks, media, and unlikely allies.

• Excellent linguistic skills in English, additional language an advantage (French, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Bahasa, Arabic, etc)

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Strong understanding of cultural diversity and experience working with international teams

• Strong demonstrated experience in designing communications campaigns and storytelling

• Strong interest in understanding audience psyche and behaviour and designing targeted content

• A good understanding of how culture, politics, society and technology shape narratives, world views and values

• Interest in communicating for civic action, civil society, and positive social change

• Experience using social media, creating content and analytics on LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Knowledge of packaging content and pitching to journalists. A demonstrated track record of working with the press.

• Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, DaVinci Resolve, Canva, Google Analytics, Website Editors (Content Management Systems), Customer Management Systems (CRM), Mass email software programs and similar software experience.

• Experience in using and administering chat messengers.

• Experience working with civic society organisations, social enterprises, and the human rights sector will be an advantage.

• Linguistic proficiency in major global south language(s) will be an advantage.
